Checkout Usability Audit

What are the 15 most important changes you can make to your checkout process?

Benchmark-expert-audit-intro

In April 2012 we benchmarked the top 100 grossing e-commerce sites and found that on average they violated 21 checkout usability guidelines.

Clearly, even the most optimized checkout processes still has room for improvement. Which is why we offer a checkout usability audit based on the 63 findings from our E-Commerce Checkout Usability research study.

We will put together a detailed report of the 15 most important usability improvements you can make to your checkout process.

“Given the tricky science of conversion rate optimization, it is great to know that you are dealing with professionals whose advice is based on solid research. It was a pleasure collaborating with the Baymard team.”

Aaron Henig, Operations Manager at Epicenter Consulting, New York

Who is this checkout audit intended for?

  • E-commerce sites that want to redesign their checkout process and would like inspiration before commencing a checkout redesign project.
  • E-commerce sites with an already optimized checkout process that need a set of fresh eyes to identify the last usability improvements.
  • E-commerce sites that would like to benchmark their checkout experience against major competitors.
  • Agencies and designers that are working on an e-commerce project and want reassurance that they’re on the right track with their current checkout design.

Return on Investment: Even the smallest reduction in the abandonment rate for any e-commerce site with significant sales will lead to a notable return on investment, e.g. a reduction from 67% to 65% cart abandonment rate for a site with $1,000,000 annual sales will yield $60,000 extra sales every single year.

How will the audit be delivered? And what will it cost?

The audit will be delivered as a PowerPoint presentation and as a PDF file for printing. It will be approximately 45 pages in total, consisting of:

  1. 15 suggestions for checkout improvements, typically 3 pages each: 1 page with explanation of the suggested change, and 2-4 examples of best practice from the top 100 e-commerce sites.
  2. A private listing in the top 100 benchmark database (that only you can see) to see how your checkout stacks up against major competitors.
  3. A 1-hour phone meeting where we go over the audit results and your checkout process.

The audit will be conducted by one of the two lead researchers of the original checkout usability study: Jamie Appleseed or Christian Holst from Baymard Institute.

“Within a very short time they provided 15 clear, useful improvement suggestions for our checkout process. We intend to implement all of them. It’s easy to find companies that offer website improvement suggestions. But, most companies don’t do their homework and don’t provide specific examples of how best to make the improvements. With Baymard Institute, the checkout process suggestions they made were intuitive, specific, and actionable. I highly recommend their audit service.”
