Help us help the UX teams at the largest e-commerce sites in the world.
We’re looking for a UI web designer to be the primary person responsible for the designs of baymard.com and Baymard Premium, our research subscription service.
You’ll essentially be responsible for the interface design of Baymard’s end-user experience — making our research a pleasure to use for the thousands of web professionals that rely on it, all the way from the independent freelance web designer to the UX Director of a Fortune 500 company.
This is a remote full-time position.
Examples of What You’ll Be Doing
Two examples of the types of interfaces you’ll be working on designing and improving over time.
Below are some concrete examples of what typical design tasks would look like:
- Web UI design. You’ll deep-dive on creating perfected and harmonic UIs for Baymard’s key pages and website elements. That could be improving the aesthetics of pages such as the Case Studies, Annotated Screenshots, Homepage, etc.
- Extensive visual explorations of new features. Often you’ll be given a project brief for an upcoming feature, and will then be working on exploring the full solution space of possible UIs. A brief could be something like: “Explore a series of concrete design concepts for a new element to be added to our case study pages that highlights the 10 most interesting examples from the reviewed website.”.
- Optimize the designs of text-heavy pages. As many of our key pages contain long texts (by web standards, at least) — including our Audit Service, Product Page, Research Articles, etc. — even small incremental gains in the reading experience have a dramatic impact on our overall UX.
- Create interactive mockups. You’ll sometimes make interactive versions of the final design so our team of UX researchers can play around with it and get a crystal clear idea of what the final feature would feel like. These interactive mockups will furthermore serve as a “design spec” for our developers.
- Quality assure the implemented versions of your design. Following your designs all the way from early idea through final implementation, reviewing and communicating to our developers what needs to be tweaked in order to realize the design’s vision and objectives.

About Your Job at Baymard
Your job will be building out and refining the UI of Baymard’s web platform.
At Baymard you’ll be working alongside a team of dedicated usability researchers that conduct cutting-edge e-commerce research used by UX teams at some of the biggest brands in the world (clients include Amazon, Home Depot, Nike, Lenovo, Etsy, etc). Your job will be creating the designs for new features and refining the existing designs of Baymard’s web platform.
- Work – Your primary responsibility will be exploring, evolving, and polishing the UI designs of Baymard’s web platform called Baymard Premium (this is the “delivery vehicle” for all of our research work). You’ll be working closely with the founders of Baymard and our small in-house developer team. You’ll often be starting with already identified project goals, user needs, and overarching concepts for solutions, and then yourself: explore the full ‘solution space’, detail the UI components, present your work to the team, revise your designs based on their feedback, build interactive prototypes, polish the aesthetics, then polish the aesthetics some more, and lastly, ensure that when the final feature is developed it matches the vision of your work and our project.
- Team – Most of Baymard’s 15-people team are UX researchers. While our research teams know everything about user behavior, they don’t create new designs themselves. You will therefore be the “owner” of Baymard’s designs, and must therefore take joy in leading the design efforts of baymard.com, our internal tools, and most importantly Baymard Premium (our research subscription service).
- Remote – We want to work with the smartest and most dedicated people around the world, and all of our positions are therefore open to full-time remote work. In other words, you are welcome to work with us from any location you prefer (which 90% of our employees do). If you want to, you’re of course also welcome to work in our Copenhagen-based office (or a mix!).
Excellent UI design skills are a prerequisite for this position.
Specifically, we’re looking for candidates who possess the following skills and personal traits. The numbers in brackets indicate the weighted importance of each on a 7-point scale (higher = more important). These weights reflect how candidates will be evaluated, so make sure your application illustrates your prowess in the highest-weighted skills and traits.
Skills for this position:
- [7/7] User Interface design of websites — you can perfect and polish all visual details of a User Interface to create perfect shading, page harmony, element proximity, style consistency throughout the site, etc., and make text-heavy pages aesthetically pleasing without sacrificing readability.
- [5/7] Translating abstract concept to concrete design explorations — you’re able to take an identified user problem and overarching concept for a solution (as text-only descriptions), and then perform a series of visual design explorations of that solution in order to validate and stress-test assumptions around the final end-user experience.
- [4/7] Ability to do interactive mockups — you can create clickable prototypes of UI designs to illustrate features, flows, and interactive components.
- [3/7] Quality assurance — you know how to review features once they have been developed, and provide helpful feedback to developers that help them implement the design and project vision; including communicating and collaborating directly with developers to create smart compromises. This is a “nice-to-have”.
- [1/7] Technical understanding — understanding of technical implications and limitations. This is a “nice-to-have”.
- [1/7] Copywriting and marketing — can write microcopy and has an appreciation for marketing and how design fits into that. This is a “nice-to-have”.
Traits we’re looking for:
- [7/7] Independent — as there won’t be any other “design champions” on the team, you must be independent and unafraid to face new challenges on your own.
- [3/7] Meta-level awareness — you should be capable of doing both high-level and low-level work without conflating the two; in other words, not “getting lost in the details” or afraid to share early first drafts during the early project phases when doing high-level explorations; yet in the later project phases also being capable of polishing the last 5% before a design goes into development. This is a “nice-to-have”.
We furthermore expect you to be fluent in english, comfortable working remotely via digital platforms, and willing to do a few yearly travels for team meetups (expect 1-3 weeks of travel each year).
Interest in UX research and e-commerce is a small bonus, but no experience or skills are necessary in this area as you’ll work with (and have the option to learn from) the best in the industry.
Salary: in accordance with qualifications.

Key Work Values at Baymard
90% of our team works remotely, but once a year we all get together for a meetup. This is from our meetup on Iceland, where one of the activities was snowmobiling on glaciers.

The two founders of Baymard have therefore performed every type of task in the organization themselves (from programming to UX testing), and continue to work directly on the product.
