At Baymard, we’ve just released a new UX benchmark of 9 “Sports Gear & Equipment” sites.

This follows from our large-scale user testing and adds to our existing ecommerce UX benchmark.

9 Sports Gear & Equipment UX Case Studies

The 9 sites have been manually assessed across 500+ research-based UX parameters relevant to the Sports Gear & Equipment industry, resulting in 4,700+ weighted UX performance scores and 3,800+ best practice examples from sports gear sites.

The 9 in-depth Sports Gear & Equipment UX case studies are:

Sports Gear & Equipment UX Performance

Each of the 9 new Sports Gear & Equipment sites’ 4,700+ UX performance scores, along with the score from the last site in our benchmark, is summarized in the interactive scatterplot below — showing you how they perform collectively and individually:

The overall UX performance of the average sports gear site was “mediocre,” leaning towards “decent”.

Thus, no sites delivered a “good” or better overall user experience.

These were among the most common issues encountered in the benchmark:

Key breakdowns appeared in areas like filter coverage, where activity-specific or seasonal refinements were often missing; product galleries, which lacked tools like zoom or scale references; and specification content, which was inconsistently structured or overly dense.

Search often returned relevant products, but rarely offered the guidance needed to explore by sport or use case.

At checkout, missing cost estimates and limited shipping visibility disrupted purchase decisions.

Post-purchase, weak account dashboards and inconsistent confirmation logic left users with little support for tracking, updating, or repeating orders.

Together, these UX gaps made it harder to navigate product complexity, compare confidently, or complete common ecommerce tasks efficiently.

A publicly available overview of the research and benchmark can be found on our Sports Gear & Equipment UX research overview page.
