Grainger’s E-Commerce UX

This is a case study of Grainger’s e-commerce user experience (UX) performance. It’s based on a full-performance review of more than 550 design elements. 59 other sites have also been benchmarked for a complete picture of the e-commerce UX landscape

Grainger’s overall e-commerce UX performance is mediocre. Notably, Grainger’s UX performance is impeded by poor Product Page, poor Accounts & Self-Service, and mediocre Cart & Checkout.

Grainger’s Homepage & Category performance is mediocre. Notably, Grainger’s category performance is hampered by poor Homepage and Intermediary Category Pages, although this is helped somewhat by good Site-Wide Layout.

Grainger’s On-Site Search performance is acceptable. For instance, Grainger’s search experience has state of the art Search Form & Logic and good Search Query Types yet suffers from mediocre Results Logic & Guidance and Results Layout & Filtering.

Grainger’s Product Lists & Filtering performance is mediocre. Some of Grainger’s biggest product list usability issues are due to poor Filtering: Available Filters, poor List Items: Interface & Hit Areas, and broken List Items: Personalization. That said, their product listings perform well within List Layout.

Grainger’s Product Page performance is poor. Grainger’s product page experience in particular suffers from usability issues caused by poor Product Variations, The ‘Buy’ Section, and Cross-Sells & Cross-Navigation. That said, their product page experience performs well within Product Video & 360-View.

Grainger’s Cart & Checkout performance is mediocre. Grainger’s checkout in particular suffers from usability issues caused by mediocre Gifting Flow & Features, poor Field Design & Features, and poor Shopping Cart & “Added to Cart” Behavior. That said, their checkout performs great within Shipping & Store Pickup.

Grainger’s Accounts & Self-Service performance is poor. Grainger’s account experience is particularly thwarted by usability issues related to mediocre Account Drop-Down, broken Order Returns, and broken Account Sign In.

Grainger’s Mobile E-Commerce performance is acceptable. Notably, Grainger’s mobile performance is hampered by broken Mobile Checkout Information and Mobile Product Page Layouts, although this is helped somewhat by good Mobile Filtering & Sorting and decent Mobile Form Field Usability.
